Abstract

In this paper, a novel WiGig coverage area management technique for dual-band (Wi-FilWiGig) WLAN is proposed. By using the Wi-Fi received signal strength (RSS), the probability density function (PDF) of the separated distance between the AP position and the actual UE position is determined. Based on this along with the PDF of the WiGig shadowing using WiGig link model, the PDF of the WiGig received power can be calculated for a user equipment (UE). Thus, WiGig in-coverage or out-of-coverage decisions can be taken by evaluating the cumulative distribution function (CDF) of the WiGig received power up to a certain power level and comparing it with a predefined threshold; where fixed or dynamic thresholds can be used in this context. Thanks to the proposed WiGig coverage area management, WiGig power consumption is minimized while sufficiently utilizing the WiGig band. Analytical and numerical analysis confirm the superiority of the proposed scheme over the existing ones.
