title = "Naringenin (4,5,7-trihydroxyflavanone) as a potent neuroprotective agent: From chemistry to medicine",
abstract = "As a result of an increase in human life span, there is a steep rise in the occurrence of a neurodegenerative disorder. Neurodegenerative disorders are of great concern as they hamper the overall quality of life, especially in elderly people. Neuro-degeneration is a complex and multi-factorial process that includes increased oxidative stress and inflammation, reduced expression of trophic factors, expression of pro-apoptotic proteins, dysfunction of the ubiquitin-proteasome system and glutamatergic neurotoxicity. Many research groups around the globe are working on bioactive natural compounds for finding effective drugs to prevent such diseases. Flavonoids are dietary components that exert a variety of biochemical and pharmacological effects. Recently, considerable interest has been focused on naringenin (4,5,7-trihydroxyflavanone) as one of the major flavone glycosides present in citrus fruits. Naringenin shows neuroprotection by exhibiting a significant effect on many downstream signaling pathways. In this review, we will be discussing bioavailability, chemical nature and mechanism of action of naringenin with reference to the therapeutic efficacy as a neuroprotectant.",
