Abstract

This study is aimed to evaluate the Antioxidant and Antimicrobial effects of various extracts of Tarconanthus camphoratus L. a plant collected from Yemen. The antioxidant evaluated by using DPPH (1, 1-diphenyl-2-picryl hydrazyl and β-carotene bleaching method, while antimicrobial test achieved by using agar dilution method. The (Dichloromethane/Ethyl acetate) extract showed strong antioxidant activity, almost similar in effect to standard compounds, while hexane extract showed weak antioxidant activity. The results of the antimicrobial activity are shown that (Dichloromethane/Ethyl acetate) and hexane extracts at 1 mg/ml had activity against Gram-positive bacteria: Bacillus subtilis, Staphylococcus aureus, however, only hexane extract showed activity Candida albicans. On the other hand, no activity was registered against Gram-negative bacteria.
