Abstract

We present a new antenna design paradigm based on the metasurface concept. The design concept is based on Huygens principle. A new antenna is composed of an ensemble of electrically-small resonators, or elements. Unlike conventional array antennas where the distance between adjacent antennas is close to λ/2, here the distance between the radiators is electrically very small which requires tuning of the input impedance of the elements to maximize power transfer to the antenna. An array of 8 × 8 cross resonators arranged on Rogers substrate was designed to operate at 3GHz. The new metasurface antenna has the advantage of fine tuning the gain through incrementally adding additional elements. Most importantly, the antenna can be designed to have maximum gain in any practically any direction in the half plane.
