Abstract

The feasibility of friction stir spot extrusion-brazing (FSSEB) of AA5083-H112 and brass sheets by inserting Zn as interlayer was assessed in this paper. Results showed that the FSSEB process had an influential role in the microstructure of the brazed layers at the interface of the AA5083/brass joint. Further, results showed that the Zn interlayer could act as an obstacle and resulted in a significant decrease of detrimental intermetallic compounds at the interface. Besides, it is found that the FSSEB process entirely filled the pre-threaded hole and thereby improved the mechanical intermixing/interlocking features of base alloys and consequently produced a defect-free weld and marvelous tensile/shear strength.
