The Antibiotic Resistance Patterns of Klebsiella pneumoniae in a Military Hospital in Al-Kharj, Saudi Arabia

Abstract

This study was a retrospective one included collecting data from bacterial isolates results to investigate the antimicrobial sensitivities of Klebsiella pneumoniae isolates in a military hospital in Alkharj. The results of bacterial isolates were collected by the Department of Microbiology in the hospital. The per-centage of K. pneumoniae was 10.50% of gram-negative bacteria in 2018 and 12.20% in 2019. In 2018, K. pneumoniae bacteria were high resistant to nitrofurantoin and to cephalothin (susceptibility rate = 60%). K. pneumoniae resistance to other antibiotics was less than 40%. In 2019, K. pneumoniae resistance was increased, and the resistance rate was more than 50% to 9 antibiotics. The present study confirmed the increasing trend in the proportion of multidrug-resistant K. pneumoniae. Our study could be served as a reference for improving patients’ care, founding antimicrobial guidelines, and gaining an insight into the changes in the epidemiology of resistant pathogens.
