Abstract

Telogen effluvium is a type of alopecia characterized by diffuse, frequently acute hair shedding. Another chronic type with a more gradual onset is also observed. Telogen effluvium is the most prevalent cause of non-scarring diffuse hair shedding. It is a reactive process induced by hormonal changes, metabolic stress, or drugs. An increase in telogen hair loss does not imply a reason because telogen effluvium may be confused with other hair disorders. Dermoscopy, a modern diagnostic method, can be used to distinguish a variety of hair diseases. This review discusses the putative causal variables, clinical manifestations, diagnostic techniques, and therapeutic approaches.
