Abstract

The influence of material positioning during modified friction stir clinching brazing (MFSCB) of Cu/Al (condition #1) and Al/Cu (condition #2) with the use of Zn as interlayer on metallurgical and mechanical properties was assessed. It was found that properties of MFSCB joints are markedly affected by the positioning of the materials. Further, results demonstrated that in condition #1, when pure Cu was placed on top of the AA5083, a sound weld without any crack at the brazed zone was created and the fracture load of the joint during peel test appreciably improved (approximately 30%) in comparison with condition #2.
