Abstract

A simple, precise, accurate and reliable high performance thin layer chromatographic (HPTLC) method has been developed for the quantification of embelin in fruits of Embelia ribes Burm. Chromatographic analysis was performed using ethanolic extract of dried fruits of Embelia ribes Burm, on silica gel GF254 HPTLC plates, using a solvent system, comprising of ethyl acetate : methanol, 9:1 (v/v). Detection and quantitation of embelin was achieved at 365 nm. The total content of embelin in Embelia ribes fruits was estimated to be 0.0337176 %. The proposed HPTLC method provides a good resolution of embelin from other constituents present in the ethanolic extract of dried fruits of Embelia ribes Burm.
