Abstract

Aluminum alloy AA7020-T6 of 10mm thickness is friction stir welded using 800rpm tool rotation rate and different tool traverse speed of 40, 80 and 120mm/min using a tapered tool of 9.8mm probe length. The effect of post weld heat treatment on the microstructure stability inside the nugget zone as well as the hardness is also examined. Both the welded and post weld heat treated materials are investigated using optical microscopy, hardness measurement and tensile testing. A significant grain refining is obtained inside the nugget after friction stir welding (FSW) that was stable after post weld heat treatment. Hardness is increased with increasing the transverse speed after FSW while it is decreased after post weld heat treatment in all cases. Tensile testing results showed an increase with increasing the welding speed with a weld efficiency about 80% is obtained. More investigation is needed to find out the causes behind the anomalous behavior of the alloy after PWHT in terms of hardness and tensile results.
