Abstract
Background: There is a paucity of data in the literature evaluating the safety of concomitant bariatric surgery (CBS) with other surgical procedures in Saudi Arabia. This study aims to evaluate the morbidity and mortality of CBS at a private center. Method: This is a prospective data collection of all patients who had CBS. Demographics and surgical details were recorded. Patients were evaluated 1 year postoperatively for any complications graded by the Clavien-Dindo grading system. Results: Two hundred and thirty-three patients were subjected to CBS. The procedures included primary, revisional, and conversional bariatric surgery (BS) done with hiatal hernia repair, laparoscopic cholecystectomy, and/or ventral hernia repair. There were no deaths or readmissions. Most of the complications were Grade I and managed conservatively. Conclusion: With a well-trained multidisciplinary team, combining BS with other procedures is safe and feasible at a private center, with expedited management and convenience for the patients. Additional larger studies are needed to evaluate and confirm these findings.
