Abstract

Purpose The purpose of this study was to compare both clinically and radiographically the effect of using 5-fluorouracil cream (5-FU) versus modified carnoy’s solution as adjunctive methods in treatment of odontogenic keratocyst (OKC). Patients and methods Twenty patients with mandibular OKC were included in this study, patients were randomly allocated into two equal groups, group I: consisted of 10 patients in whom OKCs were treated with enucleation and peripheral ostectomy followed by application of 5-FU cream; group II: consisted of 10 patients in whom OKCs were treated with enucleation and peripheral ostectomy followed by application of modified carnoy’s solution. Results Complete soft tissue healing was achieved uneventfully in all patients of both groups, lip paresthesia in group I all patients not encountered permanent paresthesia while in group II, three patients encountered permanent paresthesia. Radiographically, bone healing occurred in both groups, and bone density significantly increased along the different follow-up periods with highest scores of bone density occurred in group I. Conclusion The topical application of 5-FU cream as adjunctive therapy for treatment of OKCs was highly effective in decreasing local recurrence with normal bone healing and lower incidence of neurosensory disturbance.
