Abstract

We present the design and concept of 3-dimensional (3-D) electromagnetic energy collection for microwave energy harvesting. We show that by vertically stacking panels of electromagnetic energy collectors, the power collected experiences a significant enhancement over a single 2-D panel. Here, we present an example of the power harvested by a 3-D 4 × 4 × 4 folded dipole antenna arrays compared to a 2-D 4 × 4 antenna panel both occupying the same 2-D footprint. Numerical simulations show that the 3-D stacked arrays can achieve power absorption enhancement of up to 5 when compared to a single panel.
